It has been a while
since
we issued our last news bulletin but please don't imagine we have
been resting on our laurels. Far from it, in fact we have been
working hard at producing a Conservation Area extension designation
report through the services of a conservation consultant.
If you attended our
public meeting on 11th March you will recall we presented
our proposals to seek agreement from the Council's Planning
Department to extend the present Conservation Area. In his
presentation, consultant Geoffrey Lane, who we were recommended to
engage in producing a designation report for the Council, outlined
how inclusion may affect residents if Conservation Status was
achieved.
Since that meeting two
of
our committee members have undertaken, during hundreds of freely
given hours, substantial research into the development of Allestree,
and in particular the early parts of the 20th Century.
This research has impressed the consultant, Geoffrey Lane, but also
afforded him the opportunity to deliver a very convincing report to
the Conservation Department of Derby City Council which will, if
adopted, aid them in preventing inappropriate developments and the
demolition of character properties.
It is worth looking at
how the residents of Chester Green achieved Conservation area
designation which will now protect another highly prized area of
Derby's heritage.
These problems do not
only affect homes with large gardens. We have just assisted with the
objection to an extremely badly contrived proposal to shoe horn a
three storey dwelling between 1 and 3 Edale Close, both chalet
bungalows. The new building was intended to take up the space
occupied by a small garden and garage which gives you an idea of the
cramped proposals being made. Edale Close is located off Dovedale
Rise which in turn runs off the bottom end of Carsington Crescent.
Congratulations should
be
conveyed to Rita Staples who lives in Edale Close and who not only
mobilised fellow residents and achieved over 32 objectors from nearby
residents, but also gained opinion from an hydrologist, a structural
engineer and a barrister so it proves that not only does people power
work but also demonstrates that just because your house
may be located within one of the more densely developed areas of
Allestree inappropriate development can still present a threat.
We will keep you posted
on the Allestree Conservation Area project in 2010. It just remains
for us to thank you all, as members of APG, for your continuing
support and to wish you,
A
very merry Christmas and a happy New Year
