Well we are hoping you will put a little more than a penny into the funds of APG by renewing your membership to the group for 2009. A year’s membership remains at only £10 and we hope you will feel our aims to preserve Allestree, for the people of Allestree, a worthwhile cause.

We have campaigned against two character deforming developments in Allestree on Duffield Road and Kings Croft. Whilst we lost the campaign to prevent planning being granted for both, we delayed the process to such an extent that neither developer has shown any appetite to continue, particularly given the financial climate and decline in property values. We are optimistic that we may have lost a couple of battles but the war may be close to being won.

Both the City Council, and we think, most realistic observers, accept that some development on the south side of Kings Croft is inevitable. APG is committed to ensuring this does not destroy the character of the street scene and that any building works enhance and reflect the existing character.

APG is not anti-development and progress determines that it is inevitable anyway. As long as it is sympathetically undertaken and evolutionary not revolutionary it should improve the area for the majority not feather the financial nests of the minority.

So as we reach the end of 2008 we would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your tremendous support throughout the year and particularly the magnificent turn out we have achieved at all of our meetings, but especially the ‘Meet the Planners’ on that cold and frosty 2^nd of December evening. May we wish for you and yours a happy and peaceful Christmas and the determination to face an uncertain 2009 with the comfort and confidence that you really are living amongst a caring community.
